A 2-Minute Typing Warm-Up Routine for Kids
This isn't a replacement for a full practice plan — it's a short routine to run right before any session, so practice starts from a calm, steady position instead of jumping straight in.
Why a warm-up helps
Starting a session cold, especially after a break or a change in activity, often means the first minute or two gets wasted on mistakes that have nothing to do with actual skill — just a hand that hasn't settled into position yet. A quick, consistent warm-up removes that noise before it counts.
The routine
- 1
Shake it out
A few seconds of gently shaking out both hands and wrists to settle in and relax before starting.
- 2
Find home row
Rest fingers on A S D F and J K L ; without looking down, and hold that position for a moment.
- 3
Type the home row, slowly
Type the full home row forward, then backward, at a deliberately unhurried pace — no timer.
- 4
One familiar word
Type one short, comfortable word accurately before moving into the real practice session.
When to skip it
A confident typist already mid-session doesn't need to restart with a warm-up every time — it's most useful at the very start of a session, or after any longer gap in practice, like a school break.
